Battery Recycling Lines

Three lines, three feedstocks: spent cells, electrode scrap, and raw material packaging.

Battery recycling lines recover saleable material from lithium-ion waste that would otherwise reach landfill. Torontech supplies three configurations under the ToronLi-ion™ name, each built around a different input. Cell manufacturers, recyclers, and refiners use them to separate metals, powder, and polymer into distinct fractions. Every line runs under central PLC control.

Feedstock decides the process route. Whole cells call for inert-atmosphere crushing and thermal treatment before sorting. Coated electrode scrap calls for binder removal and foil granulation, while woven packaging calls for shredding, washing, and dewatering. Matching the line to the input governs both recovery rate and output purity.

Applications

Battery recycling lines serve the full material loop, from cell production scrap through to end-of-life recovery.

  • Electric Vehicle Battery Recycling: processes end-of-life traction packs, modules, and cells into separated metal and powder fractions.
  • Cell Manufacturing Scrap Recovery: returns coating rejects, slitting trim, and off-spec electrode material to the supply chain.
  • Black Mass Production: supplies hydrometallurgical refiners with screened cathode and anode powder at consistent particle size.
  • Consumer Electronics Battery Recovery: handles mobile phone, laptop, and portable device cells arriving in mixed collection streams.
  • Energy Storage Decommissioning: processes retired grid and commercial storage batteries reaching end of service.
  • Copper and Aluminum Recovery: produces separated metal granules through air classification and specific gravity sorting.
  • Raw Material Packaging Recovery: captures residual powder and polypropylene fabric from used bulk bags.
  • Waste Management Contractors: brings lithium battery treatment in house rather than shipping cells to third parties.

Battery Recycling Line Range

The three lines address different points in the battery material loop, and a plant handling more than one stream can run them alongside each other.

Lithium-ion Battery Recycling System (ToronLi-ion™)

The flagship line processes spent cells, modules, and packs at 500 to 2,000 kg/h. Coarse crushing runs inside a sealed four-shaft chamber that accepts nitrogen filling, so charged cells shred in a low-oxygen atmosphere. Drying, low-temperature cracking, screening, air sorting, and gravity sorting then separate black mass, copper granules, aluminum granules, separator film, and casing material.

Lithium-Ion Electrode Scrap Recycling Line (ToronLi-ion™ ESR)

The ESR line handles coated cathode and anode sheets, pole pieces, and laminate offcuts rather than assembled cells. Thermal treatment decomposes the polymer binder holding coating to foil, and the fine crusher then strips powder while granulating the copper and aluminum current collectors. Supplier data reports recovery above 95 percent of reusable material.

Battery Material Bulk Bag Recycling Line (ToronLi-ion™ MBB)

The MBB line recovers value from the packaging side of the plant. Used flexible intermediate bulk containers pass through shredding, washing, dewatering, and packaging, yielding two outputs: residual material powder and clean polypropylene fabric. Sites receiving cathode precursor, graphite, and lithium salts in bulk bags use it to capture powder that would otherwise leave with the packaging.

How to Choose the Right Battery Recycling Line

  • For spent cells, modules, and EV packs: choose the ToronLi-ion™ system, which includes the inert-atmosphere crushing and pyrolysis stages that charged cells require.
  • For coated electrode sheet and pole piece scrap: choose the ESR line, built around binder removal and foil granulation rather than cell dismantling.
  • For used bulk bags and raw material packaging: choose the MBB line, which recovers both the residual powder and the polypropylene fabric.
  • For supplying black mass under contract: specify the screening and sorting stages against the particle size and purity your refiner accepts.
  • For plants generating more than one stream: the modular architecture lets you commission one line first and add others as volumes grow.
  • For sites processing cells without prior discharge: confirm the nitrogen filling and multi-level fire protection options during system design.
