Biomass Processing System

Biomass Processing Systems | ISO 17225 Solid Biofuel Classification

A Biomass Processing System reduces bulky agricultural and forestry waste, such as straw, stalks, reeds, and wood residue, into a consistent particle size for biogas, briquette, pellet, or gasification feedstock. Torontech's ToronBPS™ range covers three configurations built around double shaft and ultrafine shredding stages, with output classified against the ISO 17225 solid biofuel series. Biogas plants, green methanol and hydrogen producers, and gasification or co-firing facilities use these systems to convert raw biomass into a usable feedstock format on one continuous line.

The range spans a base shredding and crushing line for loose particle feedstock, a briquetting configuration for densified fuel, and a fully modular line with optional screening, drying, and pelletizing. Each configuration processes biomass through progressive shearing and grinding stages, so the output particle size matches what the downstream process, whether a digester, gasifier, or boiler, actually requires.

Applications

Biomass Processing Systems serve facilities converting agricultural or forestry residue into a usable energy feedstock.

  • Biogas and Biomethane Production: reduces straw and stalks to a fine particle size that improves feedstock digestibility in anaerobic digesters
  • Green Methanol and Hydrogen Production: prepares densified biomass briquettes as gasification feedstock for synthesis processes
  • Biomass Co-firing at Power Plants: supplies consistent-size biomass for co-firing alongside coal or other primary fuel
  • Agricultural and Forestry Residue Recycling: processes corn straw, wheat stalk, rice straw, reeds, peanut straw, waste wood, and palm waste
  • Biomass Pellet and Briquette Manufacturing: supplies fine, dried feedstock for pellet mills producing biomass pellets or briquettes for resale

Biomass Processing System Range

The range covers three configurations, chosen by the feedstock format your downstream process requires.

Biomass Processing System (ToronBPS™ 100)

A base configuration for biomethane and alternative fuel feedstock. A dual shaft shredder and a two to three-stage fine crushing sequence reduce material to 30-50 mm or, with a third crushing stage, down to 1-5 mm. The fully enclosed system runs with negative pressure dust collection and needs only one to two operators. This configuration suits biogas and biomethane facilities that need loose, fine particle feedstock without a molding stage.

Biomass Processing System (ToronBPS™ 200B)

A briquetting configuration for green methanol and hydrogen feedstock. Bale shredding and two-stage fine shredding reduce material to the particle size a biomass pelletizer requires, and a modular molding line compresses the shredded material into dense briquettes. This configuration suits facilities that need a densified, transport-efficient feedstock for gasification rather than loose particulate material.

Biomass Processing System (ToronBPS™ 300M)

A fully modular configuration for gasification and co-firing feedstock. A dual-shaft shredder and ultrafine shredder reduce material to 5 mm or finer, with optional trommel screening, magnetic separation, drying, and pelletizing units added as needed. Output can be configured as fine powder, coarse straw, pellets, or briquettes, depending on what the downstream gasification or co-firing process requires. This configuration suits facilities that need flexibility across multiple feedstock formats on one line.

How to Choose the Right Biomass Processing System

  • For biogas or biomethane digesters needing loose feedstock: choose the ToronBPS™ 100 for straightforward shredding and crushing to particle size, without a molding stage.
  • For gasification feedstock that needs to be dense and transport-efficient: choose the ToronBPS™ 200B for integrated briquetting.
  • For facilities running multiple feedstock formats or planning to scale output types: choose the ToronBPS™ 300M for its modular screening, drying, and pelletizing options.
  • For sites processing mostly herbaceous residue (straw, reeds): any configuration applies, though output should be classified against ISO 17225-6 or ISO 17225-7 for non-woody feedstock.
  • For sites processing mostly wood or forestry residue: the ToronBPS™ 300M's optional pelletizing suits wood pellet output classified against ISO 17225-2.
