Theory and Method
Voltage withstand (dielectric strength) testing applies a high AC voltage across the insulation barrier of the device under test for a defined period, then measures the leakage current flowing through the insulation. If the leakage current remains below the alarm threshold throughout the test duration, the insulation is confirmed to withstand the applied voltage without breakdown. If the leakage current exceeds the alarm threshold, the insulation is deemed to have failed the withstand voltage test.
The ToronFT™ VW applies AC voltages from 0 to 5 kV with ±5% accuracy across the DUT, while the dual-level leakage current detection system monitors leakage in two independently settable ranges: 0–2 mA (for sensitive, low-current applications) and 2–20 mA (for higher-current products). Each range has independently settable alarm thresholds (0.3 mA–2 mA for the low range; 2 mA–20 mA for the high range), providing precise, application-appropriate go/no-go determination. The programmable time range (1–99 seconds, continuous setting and manual modes) accommodates any standard-specified test duration.
