High-Capacity Computed Radiography System

High-Capacity Computed Radiography System - ToronCRS™-430 Plus

ToronCRS™-430 Plus computed radiography system converts exposed imaging plates (IP) into high-resolution digital radiographs for nondestructive testing evaluation. This CR scanner reads phosphor imaging plates up to 360 mm wide and 3,000 mm long, delivering adjustable scanning resolutions of 25 μm, 50 μm, and 100 μm. The system outputs images in DICONDE format, the standard digital data format for NDT, and connects to a workstation through Gigabit Ethernet for fast image transfer and processing.

The ToronCRS™-430 Plus replaces traditional film-based radiography workflows with a reusable imaging plate process that eliminates chemical darkroom processing. Operators expose the phosphor imaging plate using a conventional X-ray or gamma-ray source, then feed the plate into the scanner for laser readout. The scanner erases the plate after reading, making it ready for the next exposure. This scan-and-erase cycle significantly reduces consumable costs and turnaround time compared to conventional film radiography.

A horizontal roller feeding mechanism guides each imaging plate through the scanner without bending, which preserves plate life and image integrity. The unit scans up to four 80 × 360 mm plates simultaneously, supporting high-throughput inspection environments. Built-in positive pressure filtered cooling prevents dust from entering the optical path, and the overhead laser position keeps the scanning optics clean during operation.

Theory and Method

Computed radiography captures radiographic images using photostimulable luminescence (PSL), a two-step energy storage and release process. During X-ray or gamma-ray exposure, the phosphor crystals in the imaging plate absorb radiation energy and trap it as a latent image in excited electron states within the crystal lattice. The amount of stored energy at each point on the plate corresponds to the local radiation intensity, which varies according to the thickness, density, and composition of the test object.

The ToronCRS™-430 Plus reads this latent image by scanning a focused laser beam across the plate surface. The laser energy stimulates the trapped electrons, causing them to release the stored energy as visible light (photostimulated luminescence). A photomultiplier tube collects this emitted light and converts it into an electrical signal proportional to the original X-ray exposure at each pixel location. The system digitizes these signals into a high-resolution grayscale image, which the software stores in DICONDE format for evaluation and archiving.

After readout, a high-intensity erase lamp floods the plate with light to release any remaining trapped energy, resetting the plate for reuse. This read-erase cycle allows each imaging plate to serve hundreds of exposures, replacing the single-use film and chemical processing workflow of conventional radiography. The 25 μm minimum scanning resolution enables the system to detect fine discontinuities such as hairline cracks, micro-porosity, and incomplete fusion in welds, while the 50 μm and 100 μm settings offer faster scan speeds for routine inspections where maximum resolution is not required.
