Petroleum & Fuel QC: Four Questions, Four Tests.

Petroleum & Fuel QC: Four Questions, Four Tests.

Petroleum and fuel quality cannot be judged by a single measurement. A gasoline blend may meet one specification yet still perform poorly under load, while a lubricant can become too viscous for reliable cold starts or a fuel can lose flow at low temperature. Torontech’s October newsletter examines four separate testing questions: ignition quality, cold-flow behavior, cold-cranking viscosity, and flash point for fuels, oils, and related petroleum products.

The lineup includes a portable octane and cetane tester for field ignition-quality checks, a fully automatic pour and cloud point tester for low-temperature flow behavior, automated CCS systems for winter-grade engine oil evaluation, and a Pensky-Martens closed-cup flash point tester for handling and safety classification. These instruments support ASTM and ISO methods while giving laboratories a clearer way to match each test to the product, temperature condition, and QC decision involved.
